When Justin Nelson joined JP Morgan Private Bank after graduating from Tufts University in 1998, he
encountered numerous challenges in navigating the competitive world of finance.
With a dual degree in chemistry and economics, Nelson initially struggled to
find his footing without the guidance of a dedicated network. His early
experiences at JP Morgan, where he started as a web developer, laid the
foundation for his future commitment to helping other Tufts students.

Nelson recognized a significant gap—Tufts students lacked a direct conduit to employment
opportunities at leading financial institutions. In 2006, he embarked on a
mission to make JP Morgan one of Tufts’ core recruiting schools. This
initiative involved extensive travel, personal investments in accommodations,
and countless hours spent on-campus meetings with students and collecting résumés.

The early years were challenging, with Justin Nelson receiving minimal support from JP Morgan. Despite
this, his perseverance paid off. By 2009, Tufts became a core school for JP
Morgan’s asset management group. Since then, 20 Tufts graduates have secured
internships or full-time positions at the firm. Nelson’s efforts have provided
a lifeline for students, especially during tumultuous times like the 2008 financial crisis.

One notable success story is Jon Trott, a 2010 Tufts graduate. Trott credits Nelson for helping him
secure a critical internship at JP Morgan during a period when few firms were
hiring. This opportunity led to a full-time position post-graduation, illustrating
the tangible impact of Nelson’s dedication.

Today, Justin Nelson continues to champion Tufts students at JP Morgan. He collaborates
with a growing network of alumni within the firm who assist in recruitment
efforts. Nelson also volunteers for the Tufts Financial Network, sharing his
industry insights through events like the Wall Street Crash Courses.

Nelson’s ongoing commitment reflects a broader aspiration to strengthen the bridge between
academia and the corporate world. He encourages fellow Tufts alumni to advocate
for their alma mater, enhancing the career prospects for future generations. See
